Verdine Wine Obituary

Youngstown – Verdine Lane Wine, 91, of Youngstown, peacefully passed away on Sunday evening, December 15, 2019 with his loving family by his side.

Verdine will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends. He loved to be around people and socialize with them along with giving a helping hand to anyone in need.

He was born July 26, 1928 in Orlando, West Virginia, the son of the John L. and Violet (Hinkle) Wine and moved to the Youngstown area in 1953.

Verdine was employed for over 42 ½ years with Grief Brothers Steel Barrel in Youngstown where he held many positions with the company and retired in 1997.  

 He was an active member of New Covenant Church of the Nazarene in Youngstown.

Verdine had many passions in his life. He enjoyed gardening, listening to bluegrass and country gospel music and was talented at play the guitar. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Verdine was a proud United States Army Veteran earning the rank of Private First Class serving during the Korean Conflict. Verdine was awarded the following decorations for his service to our country; the Korean Service Medal, the UN Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He received an Honorable Discharge on December11, 1950.  

He leaves to cherish his precious memories his beloved wife of over 65 years the former Ruby G. Ratliff whom he married October 2, 1954, a daughter Nancy A. (Dennis) Dunleavy of New Middletown, four grandchildren Jason (Kerri) Wine, Robert (Hannah) Wine, Matthew Dunleavy and Rachel Dunleavy, five great grandchildren Leigha, Tara, Kayla and Jack Wine and Liam Gunkelman, a sister Madelene Guyer of Wellman, Iowa. and his beloved pet dog Charlie along with nieces, nephews, cousins and friends 

Besides his parents Verdine was preceded in death by a son David Lee Wine who passed away on September 9, 2011, a grandson Daniel “Danny”, four brothers Johnie, Doyle, Jerry and Hoy Wine and three sisters Emogene Blake, Arlene Conrad and Geraldine Brown.

Family and friends may pay their respects Thursday, December 19, 2019 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the Thompson Filicky Funeral Home 4221 Market Street, Youngstown and again on Friday morning from 10:30 am until 10:55 am at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Chapel.

There will be a funeral service held on Friday, December 20, 2019 at 11:00 am with Pastor Jeff Gilkerson officiating at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in there Chapel, 5400 Market St., Boardman.

Burial will take place at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Boardman with military honors being rendered by the great men of the Ellsworth VFW Post.

On behalf of Verdine’s family, they would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the entire staff of Hampton Woods Nursing Facility and especially to Crossroads Hospice for all their care and compassion shown to them and Verdine throughout this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers of flowers material contributions may be made in Verdine’s name to the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, 962 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Youngstown, Ohio 44510.
