Youngstown: There will be funeral services on Monday, March 18, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home, 4221 Market Street, Boardman, for Robert Raymond Smith, Jr., 90 who died Thursday afternoon, March 14, 2013 at Saint Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown.

Robert was born September 10, 1922 in Butler, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Robert R. and Cordelia (Sutton) Smith, Sr. He graduated from New Castle High School and attended Penn State. Robert moved to the Youngstown area in 1965.

He was a truck driver for Youngstown Hard Chrome and Plating and later worked as a clerk and service technician at Youngstown Plumbing and Hardware for 10 years, retiring in 2005.

Robert was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed cross word puzzles and working around the house.

He served in the Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He earned during World War II the Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, American Defense Service Medal, EAME Medal and The American Theater Service Medal, with 3 bronze stars and Victory Medal. In the Korean Conflict, Robert earned the Korean Service Medal with 3 bronze stars, Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation. He was a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge.

His wife of 29 years, the former Mary Ann Haney whom he married on September 11, 1965, died October 15, 1994.

Robert is survived by a daughter; Cordelia "Cory" Smith of Youngstown, and a niece Laurel Smith of Canfield.

Besides his parents and wife, Robert was preceded in death by a brother G. Sutton Smith.

Family and friends may call on Monday, March 18, 2013 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home.
