Joan Taylor Obituary

Canfield – Joan Taylor, 96, of Canfield, passed away early Friday morning, February 28, 2025.    

Joan will always be remembered as feisty yet graceful and for her impeccable style of fashion.

She was born January 28, 1929, in New Castle Pennsylvania, the daughter of Joseph and Kathleen (Byrne) Bernstein. Joan grew up in Beaver Falls and graduated from Beaver Falls High School and then continued her education at Carnegie Mellon University. Joan moved to the Youngstown area in 1952.

Joan was a proud homemaker and caregiver to many of her family members. She always made her family her top priority. Joan worked at the Hostess Shoppe in Boardman and with her family at the Taylor Family Car Dealerships throughout the valley.

Joan was a member of Boardman Methodist Church and the Sigma Club.

Joan had many passions throughout her life. She enjoyed shopping, decorating her home and spending time at Fellow Riverside Gardens, the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, and especially at Williamsburg Virginia. Joan also cherished the time she spent at Sea Pines in Hilton Head South Carolina over the years. Joan was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching football, basketball and golf. She always rooted for her favorite teams which were The Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Browns. 

Her beloved husband of over 49 years Emmet E. Taylor, whom she married on December 18, 1947 passed away on October 5, 1997.  

She leaves behind to hold onto her memories, two sons Mark (Josephine) Taylor of North Lima and Jeffrey (Wendy) Taylor of Canfield, her six grandchildren whom she adored Allison (Frank) Levak, Lindsay (Johnny) Opritza, Matthew (Melissa) Taylor, Jennifer (Gregory) Woodard, Jessica (Stephanie) Taylor and Joseph (Marielle) Taylor, her beloved five great grandchildren Lyla, Kate, Scarlett, Easton and Odilon and a sister Anne Zurcher both of Chicago along with nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Besides her parents and husband Joan was preceded in death by her two sisters Margaret Celia Shuler and Katherine Elman and a brother Edward Bernstein.   

There was a private funeral service held on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Boardman, with Pastor Russ Adams as the celebrant.  

Arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care of the Thompson Filicky Funeral Home, 4221 Market St., Boardman.

Burial took place at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Boardman.  

Joan’s family wants to thank the entire staff of Southern Care Hospice and Covington Senior Living Center for all the care and compassion shown to her throughout this challenging time.
