Lowellville: There will be funeral services on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Gibson Heights Second Presbyterian Church, 755 E. Dewey Avenue, Youngstown for Bessie Louise Shotts, 88, who passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2013, at her daughter's home from a lengthy illness surrounded by her family and dear friend from childhood, Marion.

Bessie was born on June 1, 1924 in Lawerence County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late John and Carrie (Mack) Gerner. She grew up on a farm in North Beaver Township, PA. Bessie attended Mount Jackson High School and later moved to the Youngstown area.

She attended Gibson Heights Second Presbyterian Church in Youngstown. Bessie worked at the G.E. Lamp, Youngstown as a coil winder for a short time. She was a homemaker and a loving wife and mother. She loved to sew, quilt, house cleaning and canning. She had a green thumb for growing plants. Bessie was a great cook and loved to bake pies from scratch. She enjoyed baking for the church and as fast as she baked them they were sold when her husband delivered them.

Her husband of 61 years, Arnold Lisle Shotts, whom she married on January 2, 1951, died May 25, 2012.

Bessie will be sadly missed by her daughter Gloria Jean and son-in-law Felix Michael Ciszewski of Coitsville, a son Raymond E. and daughter-in-law Mary of Columbiana, two grandchildren; Dennis and Eric, and a great granddaughter, a sister Marcella Perkins of North Lima, a brother- in-law Warren Shotts of Powder Springs, Georgia and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, Bessie is preceded in death by three brothers: Charles Gerner, Donald Gerner, and Edward Gerner, a sister; Lucille Reesh.

Family and friends may call on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home, 4221 Market Street, Boardman and on Thursday, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church.

The family would like to thank Hospice of the Valley, our families and friends for the care, love and support that they gave Bessie during this time. A special Thank you to her niece, Jacqui for her unconditional love and support.
