Thomas Paul Vestal
Youngstown: There will be funeral services on Friday, July 15, 2011 at 1 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home, 4221 Market Street, Boardman for Thomas Paul Vestal, 86 who died Wednesday morning, July 13, 2011 at Omni Manor Health Care Center.
He was born March 25, 1925 in Vienna, Ohio, the son of the late Roy W. and Martha Bell Evans Vestal.
Tom moved to the Fosterville area in Youngstown as a child and graduated from South High School in 1943. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II.
He worked as a clerk for the Erie Railroad in Youngstown for over 30 years, retiring in 1985.
Tom was an outstanding baseball player. He signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates at 18 years old and later was signed by the New York Giants. He pitched minor league ball for seven years. Just before pitching with the minors he pitched an 18 inning game at Shady Run and won. He played with the Mid Atlantic League at Idora Park and later pitched and coached AA League in Youngstown. He was a big fan of the Cleveland Browns, Ohio Buckeyes and Cleveland Indians. Tom enjoyed bowling, golfing, watching sports on TV, and watching Tiger Woods golf.
He is survived by a daughter Sharon Lynn (Ken Christoff) Meehan of Boardman, a son Thomas Lee Vestal of Youngstown, a brother Ted (Janet) Vestal of Boardman, two grandchildren Kelly Meehan and Carl (Leslie) Meehan, two great grandchildren Kara Meehan and Kailey Meehan.
Besides his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his former wife June Bennehoof, a sister Nancy McCracken, two brothers Robert Vestal and Roy Vestal.
Friends may call on Friday, July 15, 2011 from 12 Noon until 1p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home, Boardman.
The family request that material tributes take the form of contributions to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market Street, Boardman, Ohio 44512-2198.
