Thomas Bert Berndt, 75

Columbiana: On Sunday, September 18, 2011 Thomas Bert Berndt, 75, died at Saint Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.

He was born March 23, 1936 in Vienna, Ohio, the son of the late Carl A. and Pearl (Furbee) Berndt. He graduated from Liberty High School and lived in the Youngstown area until 1990, when he moved to Columbiana.

Thomas started in the restaurant industry by working in his family business, Berndt's Restaurant on Midlothian Boulevard, and later owned and operated Hasti House Restaurant with his wife Thelma in downtown Youngstown for 15 years. After moving to Columbiana, they owned and operated the Village Bakery & Deli for over six years. He was a member of the Mahoning Valley Restaurant Association.

Thomas is survived by his wife Thelma D Lough Plunkett whom he married on June 28, 1974. He also leaves several children and grandchildren.

Per Thomas request, there will be no services or calling hours.

The family requests that material tributes take the form of contributions to Alchemy Acres Animal Sanctuary, 1859 Depot Road, Salem, Ohio 44460 or to the American Lung Association, 6100 Rockside Woods Blvd., Suite 260, Independence ,Ohio 44131.
