Roger W. Saunders, Sr., 90

Boardman:  There will be funeral services on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 2 pm at Thompson Filicky Funeral Home, 4221 Market Street in Boardman for Roger W. Saunders, Sr., 90, who passed away Saturday, May 13, 2017 at Sunrise Senior Living in Poland with his loving family by his side.

Roger was born December 21, 1926 in Toronto, Canada, the son of the late Richard and Viola (Elster) Saunders.  He moved to the United States when he was a child and later to the Youngstown area.

He graduated from Kutztown State College in Kutztown, Pa, with a Bachelor's degree in Education and Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., with a Bachelor's degree in Accounting

Roger served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

He worked as an accountant for Youngstown Sheet & Tube from 1956 to 1984 and later, Republic Steel in Youngstown.  He owned and operated, along with his son, Roger Jr., Saunders Music on Market Street in Boardman for over 29 years.

He was a member of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Boardman and sang in the choir.   He enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the Jugs Station Square Dancing Club in Hubbard and the Cloverleaf Square Dancing Club in Brookfield.

Roger is survived by Mary, his wife of 21 years, whom he married on June 22, 1996, his daughter, Holly F. Wolfgang of Hillsborough, North Carolina; three stepchildren, Deborah S. Johnson of Brookfield, Michael E. Teagarden of Cleveland and Ann Marie Hiner of Brookfield; five grandchildren, Taylor Elizabeth Saunders, Joseph Wolfgang, John (Beverly) Wolfgang, Missy Huber and Eddy Hiner; and one great granddaughter, Esme.

Besides his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his son, Roger W. Saunders, Jr, son-in-law, Michael Johnson and his brother Richard E. Saunders.

Family and friends may call on Thursday, May 18, 2017 from noon till 1:45 pm at Thompson Filicky Funeral Home in Boardman, with funeral service to follow at 2 pm.
