Obituary

Robert Bruce Smith, 93

Long-time Clayton, GA resident Robert Bruce Smith, age 93, passed into the full presence of the Lord on Sunday, March 3rd in Baldwin, Georgia. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, he was the youngest and last surviving child of Adam and Elizabeth (Jamieson) Smith of Glasgow, Scotland. He was a graduate of Youngstown's South High School and began a career with Ohio Bell before enlisting in the Signal Corp during World War II, eventually attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant. After the war he returned to the telephone company, retiring as a supervising engineer. Throughout his retired years he treasured his contacts with "work friends" and their families. He was a lifetime member of the Bell Pioneers. He was also an accomplished bowler and scored several perfect games in amateur tournaments.

After moving to Clayton thirty-four years ago, he became active in the Warwoman Volunteer Fire Department, and was extremely proud when that association honored his years of service. He was a life-long Presbyterian and a good neighbor living among good neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Flora, Helen, Betty, Dorothy, Isabel, and Agnes; brothers, William, Adam, Wilson, Oliver, and James; and his beloved wife Viola Grace (Irving). He is survived by Lou (Shields), his wife of more than fifty-seven years; four children, Leslie Howe and Adam Smith of Knoxville, TN, Robert of Huron, OH, and Jeffrey of Grant, FL; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous loving nephews and nieces.
