Paul Gatchell

Aug 2, 1929 — Jun 12, 2026

POLAND - With hearts full of gratitude and sorrow, we announce the passing of our hero, Paul Ernest Gatchell, who passed away in his home on June 12, 2026 at the age of 96.

Paul was born on August 2, 1929 to Ernest and Mary Gatchell and was the youngest of six children. A stellar athlete, Paul was an All City Standout in football and basketball at South High School where he graduated in 1948. Paul attended Miami University before making the honorable decision to serve in the Korean War as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force and continued to be a supporter of the armed forces and law enforcement. Later, he became a 50+ year member of the Youngstown Masonic Temple and dedicated his career to Western and Southern Life Insurance and retiring in 1988.

While Paul’s dresser is home to his many sports trophies and recognitions, his heart is home to his true prized possession, Carole, his beloved wife of 71 years whom he married on September 11, 1954. Few are lucky enough to share over 7 decades with the love of their life, and Paul never took one second for granted.

Paul’s children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were the lights of his life. He attended every sporting event, dance recital and concert without hesitation and never a hair on his head out of place. Paul adored his family and led with grace, strength and humor — a true gentleman and family man in every way.

He was a lifelong sports fan whose Saturdays were often spent watching and cheering for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

He leaves behind the love of his life, Carole, daughters Deborah Bierdeman of North Lima and Paula Demart of Canfield; five grandchildren, Ryan, Zac and Brandan (Alexa) Bierdeman, James (Carly) Marco and Alexa (Scott) Lendak; and two great granddaughters, Loxley Bierdeman and Lillian Lendak.

He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, best friends and son-in-law, Tom Bierdeman.

In keeping with Paul’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. The family asks that you celebrate Paul’s legacy with a donation to your local Veterans Association or animal charity in honor of Paul.
