Boardman: There will be a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, July 14, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Charles Borromeo Church, 7325 Westview Drive, Boardman with Father Phillip Rogers officiating for Mary Lou Cardwell, 75, who passed away Tuesday evening, July 8, 2014 at St. Elizabeth Health Center with her family by her side.
Mary Lou was born March 5, 1939 in Youngstown, the daughter of the late David and Catherine (Lavin) McDonald. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, attended Miami University and later earned a degree in English Education from Youngstown State University.
She was a teacher and former director at the English Center, retiring in 2007.
Mary Lou was a member of Saint Charles Borromeo Church and a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority.
Mary Lou was a world traveler, an avid reader and an accomplished pianist, who shared her love of adventure, reading, and music with her family.
She is survived by her five children: Michelle (Larry) Kramer of Mentor, Catherine (Federico Chalupa) Cardwell of Columbus, Lynn Cardwell of Youngstown, David Cardwell of Cleveland, and Tom (Amy) Cardwell of Holly Springs, North Carolina, and 13 grandchildren: Lawrence, Mary, Meghan, Kaitlin, and David Kramer; Kiko (Natalie) Lisa, and Dana Chalupa; Julia and James Wilcox; Ava, Aiden, and Adelyn Cardwell; and 2 great grandchildren: Kikito and Melina Chalupa.
Besides her parents, Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Thomas N. Cardwell whom she married August 22, 1959, died October 31, 1996.
Family and friends may call on Sunday, July 13, 2014 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Thompson-Filicky Funeral Home, 4221 Market Street, Boardman and one hour prior the service Monday at Saint Charles Borromeo Church, Boardman.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the English Center, 1119 Elm Street, Youngstown, OH 44505.
The family would like to express their enduring gratitude to Lynn Cardwell for her loving, thoughtful care of their mother, grandmother and great grandmother during her extended illness. The family also wants to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Sudershan Garg and Dr. Benjamin Hayek, the nurses at St. Joseph's Cancer Center in Warren, and the doctors and nurses at St. Elizabeth's for their professional care and compassion.
