Lois "Winnie" Thullen

Boardman: Lois "Winnie" Thullen, 89 passed away peacefully on Sunday , January 15, 2012.

Mrs. Thullen , known as "Winnie" was born May 5, 1922 in Indiana, Pennsylvania to the late Charles and Beulah (Meese) Powell. She moved while in grade school with her family to Youngstown and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School.

Winnie met the love of her life, George, while attending a work dance. Her response was "He is for me" and dropped her earring into his coat pocket. She and George married in 1944. Winnie was "Rosie the Riveter" at the Youngstown Sheet and Tube while George served in the U.S. Navy overseas in Hawaii during the war.

In 1967 George and Winnie built their home in North Jackson. She was a tremendous housekeeper, cook, and entertainer. Winnie attended Faith Community Covenant Church and volunteered many times for different functions. She also worked several years for La France Cleaners and at several floral boutiques and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star.

Cherished memories will forever remain in the hearts of her grandson, Ben (Joyce) Howard of Boardman and their children Ben Jr., and Megan at home, and Justin Czerniak serving in the USAF, currently stationed in South Korea. She was very close to her sister Jean and brother-in-law Lew Rotz of Lowellville. For many, many years they spent every Sunday with her going out to dinner and playing Phase 10, her favorite card game.

Coming many miles to visit his grandmother is grandson Ed (Katie) Howard of Louisville, KY and their children Sierra, Kylie and Joseph. She also leaves niece Linda Rotz of Denver, Colorado, and niece Cheryl (Lou) Mamula of Lowellville and their children and grandchildren. She also leaves nephews Johnny, Jeff, David, and Mark and their families, all originally of La Mirada, California, who made Winnie and her sister feel very welcome during several wonderful visits.

Preceding Winnie in death were her parents Charles and Beulah Powell, her husband George in 1991, her brother Charles "Poon" and sister-in-law Betty Powell Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Thompson Funeral Home, 4221 Market Street, Boardman with Pastor Mary Jo Berry officiating.
