Boardman: Joan H. Salem, 80 died at 10:20 a.m. Saturday, January 14,, 2012, at Hospice House, Poland. She passed on her husband's birthday, Eugene Salem, who preceded her in death 14 years ago.
Joan will always be remembered by her family and friends.
She was born August 1, 1931, in Youngstown, the daughter of John and Mildred (Moore) Shallenberger.
Joan was a member of Western Reserve United Methodist Church. She was primarily a homemaker but worked as an Assistant Manager of Isaly's Restaurant before she married. Prior to retirement she worked at Eat'N Park in Boardman and food services at Y.S.U.
Her hobbies consisted of bowling, playing cards and bingo, traveling, and walking her dog, Precious. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Joan will be deeply missed by her three children, Wendy S. (Michael) Bland of South Carolina, Anthony J. (Jeanie) Salem of Columbiana, and Tammy L. (Thomas) Porter of Canfield; eight grandchildren, Bryon J. Bland, Christopher M. (Kasey) Bland, Michelle (Donald) Brodeur, Candace (Wesley) Bowers, III, Anthony Salem, Jr., Courtney Porter, Thomas Porter, Jr., and Christina Porter; and eight great grandchildren.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Shallenberger.
Friends may call on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 from 5 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior the service on Wednesday at Thompson Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Thompson Funeral Home, Boardman with Reverend Russ Adams officiating. Burial will take place at Lake Park Cemetery.
Joan's family would like to thank Hospice of the valley for their devotion and compassionate care shown to Joan during her time of illness.
