James E. Penk, Sr., 71

Boardman:  Private funeral services were held on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at Thompson Filicky Funeral Home, 4221 Market Street in Boardman for James E. Penk, Sr., 71, who died Wednesday, November 29, 2017.

Jim was born May 10, 1946 in Youngstown, the son of the late Edward S. and Marjorie K. (Backer) Penk.

He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1964.  Jim was a prominent athlete at Wilson, lettering in Football, Basketball and Track.  He also shared a relay team school record for many years.

Jim worked Plant Protection – Security for Youngstown Sheet & Tube, Campbell Works for 14 years in Youngstown until the plant closing in 1977.  From there he transferred to LTV Steel in Burns Harbor Indiana which later became I.S.G. Mittal.   Upon retirement, Jim returned back to the Mahoning Valley to reside.

Jim known as "Grandpa Boss" to his loved ones, enjoyed spending time with his family and attending his grandchildren sporting events, especially high school football games.

Jim is survived by five children, James E. (Colleen) Penk, Jr. of Austintown, Joyce Howard of Boardman, JoAnn (Brian) Simmons of Poland, Michael Penk and Lisa White, both of Indiana;  8 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and his companion, Nancy Penk.

Besides his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a brother, Gregory J. Penk.
