Etta Mae Norman, 89

Boardman: We have lost another member of the "Greatest Generation". Etta Mae (Hodge, Jarvis) Norman passed away peacefully at Hospice of the Valley on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, surrounded by her family.

Etta was born and raised on Fruit Street, on Youngstown's eastside, the only child of Robert A. Hodge (1900 - 1978) and Etta Mae (Jester) Hodge (1904 - 1963). Etta was born December 25th, (Christmas Day), 1923 and spent her formative years growing up during the depression. She graduated from East High School and was employed at Ohio Bell as a telephone operator during World War II.

She married combat wounded veteran Lee R. "Bud" Jarvis at the end of the war and they had two children, a son, Bob and a daughter Beverly. Etta was widowed in 1963 and re-entered the workplace as the telephone operator at J C Penny's at the Boardman Plaza.

In 1974 she married Daniel Norman who passed away in 1995 leaving three stepchildren and their families. They enjoyed their retirement, traveling and lived in Largo Florida for a few years before returning to the Youngstown area.

From childhood, Etta was a long time member of Grace Methodist Church and has been a loyal member of Lockwood United Methodist Church for many years. She was active in the Miriam Circle at the church, the JC Penny retirees club, and was a former Hospice volunteer.

She will also be remembered for her quick wit and devotion to her family, never missing an opportunity to visit her family and her dear lady friends.

Etta is survived by her daughter Beverly Jarvis of Struthers, a son Robert L and his wife Mary Ann of Fairfax Station, Virginia, four grandchildren, Andrew Pavis, Dean Jarvis, both of Boardman, Erika (CWOS Vince) Pope, USMC of Stafford, Virginia, Bobby (Anna) Jarvis of Friendswood, Texas and five great grandchildren; Vivian Pope, Joshua Pope, Bowdy Jarvis, Bailey Jarvis, and Tucker Jarvis.
