Elizabeth C
D'Onofrio
September 10, 1915 – October 18, 2011
Boardman: There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am at Immaculate Conception - Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, 400 Lincoln Park Drive, Youngstown on Friday, October 21, 2011 for Elizabeth "Betty" D'Onofrio, 96, who died peacefully at The Assumption Village, the wonderful place where she had been lovingly and competently cared for since November 2010. She joins her soul mate and husband of more than 63 years, Michael Sr.; he was a mathematics teacher originally from Lowellville, Ohio, who passed away in February 2007. She enjoyed reading the Youngstown Vindicator every day "to ensure that my obituary is not listed in it today." Betty the Loving Wife. Betty never met a person she didn't like. She struck up lively conversations with everyone. She was a devoted parishioner of Sacred Heart Parish in Youngstown, giving of her time, talents and treasure for more than sixty years. Like her mother Julia (Pasquale) Bartholomew Andino, she was an excellent baker and a master storyteller. Many heard her stories - over and over again - about the Great Depression. She vividly recalled details of living in Texas, Missouri, Arizona and Kansas during World War II. She worked at Strouss-Hirschberg Department Store in downtown Youngstown and welded tank components at Truscon Steel Company "to support the boys overseas in WW II." Betty the Story-telling Welder. Devoted and loving "MaMa" was always there for her three children, Lucille (John) Marino of Canfield, Ohio; Michael Jr. (Carole) D'Onofrio of Upper St. Clair (Pittsburgh), Pennsylvania; and Dr. Thomas (Yvonne) D'Onofrio of Gahanna (Columbus), Ohio. Her children's and grandchildren's accomplishments became her accomplishments. These she repeated to anyone who took the time to listen to her many, many stories. Most of her progeny have ended up in service roles as doctors, nurses and teachers. A few have worked in corporate America, including engineering, finance and financial planning, and in health care as a pharmacist and pharmaceutical sales representative. Betty the Caring Mother, her Main Profession. Betty grew up in Brier Hill on Oakland Avenue, next to the fire station. She graduated from The Rayen School. She helped raise her younger siblings during the Depression after her father was killed in a car accident. Her mother was a midwife and house cleaner, so money, food and clothing were never plentiful. The result? Both Betty and Michael Sr. were very frugal, never wasting ANYTHING. The siblings who predeceased her include Angelo (Andy) Andino, Dominic Andino, Sam Andino, and Helen Colucci. Her brother Louis Andino died at an early age in the influenza pandemic of 1918. Betty's 94-year-old sister, Marie Leskovac, resides at Renaissance Nursing Home in Boardman. Betty the Hard-working Mother-Sibling. When their family was young, Betty and Michael Sr. enjoyed car trips and vacations. During retirement, they took cruises and an occasional trip to Mountaineer Race Track or Atlantic City with Betty's brother Sam "to play the one-armed bandits until I either lost my $20 or won some money." To her dying days, she loved playing Bingo and cards at The Assumption Village. Every Christmas and Easter, she would make five gallons of Italian wedding soup the "best-tasting in the world", pies, breads, pizzelles, and biscotti to celebrate these religious feasts with her famiglia. Betty the Sharing Entertainer. Betty's seven grandchildren include: Jacqueline (Mark) Marino Naymik of Northfield, Ohio: Mark (Jennifer) D'Onofrio of Lancaster, Ohio; Brian (Danica) D'Onofrio of Bloomington, Indiana; Elizabeth (Dan) Marino Nelson of Akron; Lisa D'Onofrio of Pittsburgh; Matthew (Jessica) D'Onofrio of Columbus; and Dannyle D'Onofrio of Columbus. Betty the Understanding Grandmother. Betty's six great grandchildren are Isabella, Stella, Dominic James, Griffin, Caelan, and Charlotte. Betty the Wise Great Grandmother. Family and friends may call on Thursday, October 20, 2011 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Thompson Funeral Home, 4221 Market St., Boardman 44512, and one hour prior to the 10am mass on Friday, October 21, 2011 at Immaculate Conception - Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Youngstown. The family requests that material tributes take the form of contributions to Immaculate conception - Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, 400 Lincoln Park Drive, Youngstown, Ohio 44506.
