Andrew Martin Filicky

Boardman: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday. February 12, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Luke Church, 5235 South Avenue, Boardman with Father Joseph Fata officiating for Andrew Martin Filicky, 81, who died Saturday morning, February 9, 2013 at Park Vista Retirement Community.

Andrew was born on March 5, 1931 in Youngstown, Ohio, the second of four sons born to Joseph John and Katherine (Reigrut) Filicky. He was raised in the Youngstown area and graduated from South High School in 1949.

He was a veteran of the Air Force, serving from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Texas, Greenland and Alabama.

During his high school years, Andrew worked as a pinboy at a bowling alley and as a caddie at Mill Creek Golf Course. He later worked for his uncle at Felice Dry Cleaners on South Avenue in Youngstown as a press operator. In 1951, he started working at General Extrusions on Lake Park Road, Boardman, before becoming the Superintendent of the Anodizing Department in 1961. A few years prior to his retirement, Andrew became the manager of the Paint Department. He retired on September 16, 1994 after 43 years of service.

Andrew was a devoted Catholic, being raised at Saint Cyril and Methodius Church in Youngstown. In 1963 he became a member of Saint Luke Church. He was a member of Saint Luke's Holy Name Society for many years.

As a young man, he earned Boy Scouts Highest Rank Award, Eagle Scout. He was associated and volunteered his time with the former Troop #183, from Saint Luke Church, where his five sons were Boy Scouts. Andrew enjoyed duck hunting, fishing, woodworking, growing vegetables in his garden, and was a small game taxidermist. He enjoyed traveling our beautiful country by car and spending time with his family, especially his eight grandchildren.

Andrew is survived by his wife of 55 years, the former Anastasia Mary Kral whom he married on May 11,1957, his five children; Kenneth J. (Carol) Filicky of Poland, Diane M. Filicky of Youngstown, Richard A. (Sherry) Filicky of Poland, Edward J. (Lori) Filicky of Boardman, and Joseph A. (Stacey) Filicky of Hubbard, his three brother; Robert Filicky of Canfield, Karl D. (Katie) Filicky of Knoxville, Tennessee, Thomas E. (Susan) Filicky of Frankfort, Kentucky and seven grandsons; Kyle, Bryan, Eric, Travis, Alex, Mark, Bradley, and his only granddaughter, Emily.

Besides his parents, Andrew was preceded in death by a son Daniel J. Filicky who died July 12, 1999, and his sister-in-law Florence Filicky.

Family and friends may call on Monday, February 11, 2013 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Thompson Funeral Home, 4221 Market Street, Boardman and one hour prior the service at Saint Luke Church on Tuesday.

The family would like to thank the dedicated, compassionate and caring staff of Park Vista Retirement Community and Hospice of the Valley, Boardman, for the care, love and support that they gave to Andrew and his family during this time.
