Russell E. Dorcas, 98

Boardman – Russell E. Dorcas, 98, of Boardman, passed away Friday, December 14, 2018 at his residence with his loving family by his side.

Russell will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather brother, uncle and friend.

He was born November 2, 1920 in Youngstown, the son of Charles E. and Esther (Paulin) Dorcas and was a lifelong area resident.  Russell was extremely proud that he built his own home with the help of his father in the 1950’s. In 1978, Russell and his wife enjoyed spending time at their home in Florida from October to May and they always looked forward to coming back home to see their family.

Russell was a 1939 graduate of Boardman High School and retired in 1977 from Lykes Corporation.

Russell heard the call of his country and was a proud World War II Veteran serving in United States Navy as a Gunnersmate First Class and received an Honorable Discharge.

Russell was a member of many organizations in Youngstown and Florida. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, member of the Western Star Lodge21 F and AM, the Aut-Mori Grotto, Eastern Star Trias Chapter 523, the American Legion Post 0888 and the VFW in Sebring, Florida. He also belonged to the Sebring Golf Association of Florida for 21 years, was an amateur radio operator since 1962 and a member of the 20/9 Radio Club of Youngstown and Harc Radio Club of Sebring Florida.

Russell had many passions throughout his life. He enjoyed fishing, bowling and gardening.

He leaves to cherish his memories his two daughters Carole Vitt of Poland and Diane (Robert) Anderson of Austintown, two granddaughters Christa (James) Blythe of Columbus and Megan Vitt of Poland, a great grandson Ty Blythe and great granddaughters Piper Emerson and Leah Blythe and Wynter Vitt.

He was preceded in death by his wife the former Geraldine “Jerry” Malmfellt, a son Dan, a brother Robert and sisters Virginia Davies, Norma Bertolette and Donna Troxel.

Per Russell’s wishes there will be no services or calling hours held.

Burial will take place at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Boardman.

Arrangements were entrusted to the professional care of the Thompson-Filicky Funeral Home, 4221 Market St., Boardman.

On behalf of Russell’s family , they would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to special neighbors Sean (Pam) Walsh and Nancy Ault along with Hospice of The Valley for all the help, care and compassion that was shown to Russell and them throughout this difficult time.
