Robert L. Wayland, Sr., 87

     Poland:  Robert Lee Wayland, Sr., 87, passed away Wednesday morning, November 1, 2017  at Hamptonwoods  Nursing Center with his loving family by his side.

     Robert was born January 25, 1930 in Youngstown, the son of the late O.J. and Minnie (Scharlow) Wayland.

     He graduated from East High School in 1949, where he lettered three years in football and basketball.  He earned the All City Honors at East High School, a member of the Golden Bears (East High School) and was inducted into the Golden Bears Hall of Fame. Robert attended the University of Louisville in Kentucky, where he played football and basketball on a scholarship.  

     Robert was a lifelong resident of the Youngstown area.  He worked for Republic Steel in Youngstown as a motor inspector, electrician and foreman, retiring in 1982, after 32 years.

     Robert was a member of the former Brownlee Woods Presbyterian Church. He served as the Cubmaster for Pack 54, for 4 years, when his son, Robert was in Cub Scouts.  Robert coached Pony League Baseball and Uptown Kiwanis Pony League Hardball for several years.  He was an avid Cleveland Browns fan. Robert served on the board, was the treasurer for over 5 years and a member of the banquet committee for the Golden Bears Hall of Fame.  He was a member of the Brownlee Woods Crime Watch Committee and enjoyed hunting, golfing and woodworking.  

     Robert and his wife, Mary Lou, were great memory makers.  They both enjoyed spending time with their family and friends. He was humble, generous, a great husband, Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa, and a friend to everyone.

     Robert is survived by three children, Robert L. (Darlene) Wayland, Jr. of Berlin Center, Cynthia D. Raghanti of Boardman and Penny A. (Rod) Gustafson of Leetonia; a sister Esther Sarna of Austintown; six grandchildren, Robert L. Wayland, III, Carissa R. Wayland, Jill M. Parker, David A. (Karen) Raghanti, Eric J. (Brittany) Gustafson, Travis L. (Alisha) Gustafson; and seven great grandchildren.

     Besides his parents, Robert is preceded in death by his wife of  39 years, the former Mary Lou McNaughton whom he married on November 17, 1950, died  May 12, 1989, his son-in-law David Raghanti; three brothers, Arthur Wayland, Wilbert Wayland, and Ralph “Red” Wayland and a great granddaughter, Harper Raghanti.

     Private funeral services were held on Friday, November 3, 2017 at Thompson Filicky Funeral Home in Boardman with Pastor Lori Pugh Officiating.   There were no calling hours.
